Mount Karisimbi is a dormant volcano – part of the Virunga Volcanoes found in Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda, the volcano lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. At 4,507 meters tall, Mount Karisimbi is the highest of all the 8 volcanoes making up the Virunga Volcanoes Chain.

Detailed itinerary of Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Karisimbi Hike

Day 1: Pick up in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park – Visit the Gorilla Guardian Village

On arrival in Kigali City at Kigali International Airport, our company Guide/driver will be waiting for you. He will brief you about the tour and share details about the 4 days Tour before taking you for a tour of the city of Kigali.

Kigali City Tour allows you to witness the transformed Kigali City and Rwanda at large since the horrific genocide in 1994, Kigali City is organized, clean and developing at a fast rate. You will visit one of the genocide war memorial sites and the presidential palace museum before going out shopping for souvenirs.

Have lunch at the hotel and start a three-hour journey to Volcanoes National Park, lookout for Rwanda’s amazing countryside with rolling hills, green tea plantation and smiling locals.

Once you reach your lodge, you will have some time to rest, shower and relax before taking you to visit to the nearby Gorilla Guardians Village – formerly known as the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. The village started as a small center where former poachers could sell artisan products to tourists, with the help from the government and tourism it has now been revamped to become one of the leading cultural centers in East Africa.

While at the center, you will be entertained by traditional dance performances or visit one of the traditional huts. You may also request to dress up in traditional regalia while holding a spear for beautiful photos.

Dinner and overnight at Virunga Lodge (Luxury), the Da Vinci lodge (Midrange) or Kinigi Guest House (Budget).

Day 2:  Mount Karisimbi Hiking

Wake up early and have breakfast as you wait for your driver to take you to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration at around 9 am. While at the park headquarters, you will undergo briefing about what to expect and build endurance for the 2-day hike.

You will be assigned guides and rangers along with other hikers before being take to the starting point of the hike, remember that you will also be moving with a team of porters to help with setting the camp and cooking dinner.

Hiking Mount Karisimbi starts at 10 am, you will be provided with a walking stick, packed lunch, drinking water, hiking and camping gear. A camp will be set before reaching the summit where you will have dinner before resting for the night in a tent.

Day 3: Reach the Summit and descend down the Volcano – Transfer to Bwindi

You will be woken up by the singing birds, have early breakfast and then continue the climb to the summit of Mount Karisimbi. Your persistence will be rewarded with stunning views of the vegetation and the landscape, you will also be able to see the Volcanoes National Park and its lush green forests and on a clear day you will enjoy view of 7 of the Virunga Volcanoes including Mount Nyirangongo in DR.Congo.

After the amazing sights, it is time to descend down, once you reach the starting point, our Guide will take you for lunch and rest before embarking on the one-hour journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Dinner and Overnight at Mahogany Springs Lodge (Luxury), Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) and Buhoma Community Rest Camp (Budget).

Day 4: Gorilla trekking and transfer back to Kigali – Departure

Wake up early for breakfast, meet your guide and head to Bwindi with your packed lunch and head to Bwindi for gorilla trekking experience after briefing at the park headquarters. The trek to find mountain gorillas takes approximately 2 to 6 hours depending on their movement and where they spent their previous, upon locating them, you are allowed one of observing them go on with their life in the forest.

Later trek back to the park headquarters, meet your guide and embark on a journey to Kigali with en-route lunch. You will be dropped off at Kigali International Airport to catch your flight back home.
