Stretching over 2500 sq m of mainly savannah land, Akagera National Park is found in eastern Rwanda named after Kagera River that flows along Rwanda’s eastern boundary with Tanzania. The river feeds into Lake Ihema and other smaller lakes in and around the park.
Akagera National Park protects an African Savannah landscape of acacia and bush with patches of open grassland and a dozen swamp lakes. The park protects exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms a large protected wetland.
The park is the only place in Rwanda to sight most of the large mammals while on a Rwanda Safari, some of the animals you will encounter in Akagera National Park include elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, leopards, hyenas and several antelope species like bushbucks, Topis, Oribis, water-buck, roan antelope and duiker, klipspringer, impala and world largest antelope – the Cape eland.
In addition to wildlife, Akagera National Park has a wide variety of habitats which provide great habitat for 500 bird species, some of the remarkable bird species to lookout for include he remarkable shoebill, papyrus Gonolek, African Wattled Plover, Giant Kingfisher, Senegal Lapwings, Squacco Herons, African Open bill stock, Grey Crowned Crane, African Darter, Long-toed, Water Thick-knee, fish eagles, Cattle Egret, Hamerkop, Sacred and Hadada Ibis, Augur Buzzard, Long-crested Eagle, and Pied Crow. Black-headed and Viellot’s Black Weavers, Grey-backed Fiscals, Fan-tailed Widowbird and Caruther’s Cisticola.

1 Day Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari
Today, you will be picked up early in the morning from your hotel /resident in Kigali by our representative – your safari driver guide, he will give you a short briefing about the safari and then embark on a 2 hours journey.
Akagera National Park is a major savannah park in Rwanda and the only place you will see wildlife species including the Big Five – lions, leopards, cape buffaloes, elephants and rhinos.
When you arrive in the park, you will go for a game drive towards the northern part of the park giving you opportunities of sighting several wildlife including Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Impalas, Waterbucks, Rhinos, the elusive leopard and recently introduced Lions.
You will spend most of your day in the northern sector of the park which hosts many wildlife because of the landscape and vegetation, game drive in Akagera National Park can last about 6 hours depending on the animal sightings and interest.
You will enjoy lunch at a picnic site in the park and then continue exploring the till late in the afternoon. Then you will exit the park and proceed with your game drive and exit via the northern gate arriving in Kigali City in the evening.
Upon arrival in Kigali City, you will be dropped off either at your residence or at Kigali International Airport for your departure back home.
