On the other hand, on gorilla trekking, you visit a fully habituated gorilla family and get to spend only 1 hour with them.
This article, takes you into the differences between gorilla trekking and habituation allowing you to choose the experience that aligns with your interests and expectations.
Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking also termed as gorilla tracking is a thrilling wildlife adventure that involves hiking in the lush rainforests in search of habituated mountain gorilla families which are accustomed to human visits.
Gorilla trekking involves walking through dense forests on steep slopes, over rivers and water streams before finally encountering a gorilla family and spending an hour of observing them.
Gorilla trekking is only available in 4 national parks across Central and East Africa that is Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo. The goal of gorilla trekking is to allow visitors to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat while minimizing human interference.
The Trekking Experience
Gorilla trekking offers a sense of exploration and discovery, at the start of the experience. All trekkers gather at the park’s headquarters for briefing then set off into the forests in search for mountain gorillas led by experienced rangers. The treks can vary in duration ranging from a few hours to a full day depending on the location of the gorilla groups, as participates venture into the heart of the forest, they immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of the wilderness.
The Encounter
The culmination of the gorilla trek is the unforgettable encounter with a gorilla family, participants are granted only one hour to observe the gorillas from a respectful distance of about 10 meters (32 ft). In comparison, participants on the gorilla trekking habituation can observe the gorillas for up to four hours at a distance of 10 meters. This close but controlled interaction allows visitors to witness the behavior of gorillas, interactions as well as social dynamics.
It is a rare opportunity to see the gorillas in their natural environment, fostering a deeper appreciation for their conservation.
Conservation and Impact
Gorilla trekking plays a significant role in the conservation of mountain gorillas o endangered species, the revenue generated from gorilla permits- which grant trekkers access to the gorilla habitats contributes to the preservation of the ecosystems and the wellbeing of the local communities around the gorilla parks.
By exposing visitors to the beauty and vulnerability of the gorillas, trekking fosters a sense of responsibility for their protection.
Gorilla Habituation: Exploring the Social Life of Gorillas
Gorilla habituation process involves the gradual process of acclimating a specific troop of wild gorillas to the presence of humans, only habituated troops are accessible to visitors on gorilla trekking experiences and unhabituated troops are left undisturbed to roam freely.
The purpose of gorilla habituation process is to ensure the safety and well-being of both mountain gorillas and humans.
The Process
Gorilla habituation process is carried out by primate specialists, their assistants and park rangers. The process takes about two to three years, this process allows scientists to understand the gorillas as individuals, their behaviors and even assign names to each member.
Towards the end of the habituation process, researchers conduct a simulated exercise to test the gorillas’ comfort with the presence of people including scientists and journalists. If the gorillas pass this exercise, the group is deemed ready for trekking.
The ultimate goal of gorilla habituation process is to alleviate the innate fear that gorillas naturally have toward humans, by being present with the gorillas on a daily basis and demonstrating that humans pose no threat. The gorillas learn to remain calm and continue their normal activities in the presence of humans, at the end of the extensive habituation process. The mountain gorilla troop remains wild, residing in its natural habitat and engaging in regular daily routines, the significant change lies in the fact that the troop is now unperturbed by the presence of a small group of humans.
What is a gorilla habituation experience?
Gorilla habituation experience refers to the time spent by a visitor alongside a team of specialists engaged in the process of habituating a gorilla troop, the experience specifically involves a four – hour session where only four visitors per day can accompany the specialist as they undertake various activities to habituate the gorilla troop.
In contract to the limited time allowed during gorilla trekking, habituation experiences offer visitors the opportunity to spend several hours more with gorilla families. This extended interaction allows for a deeper understanding of their daily routines, social interactions and individual personalities.
Habituated gorillas may exhibit more natural behaviors as they are less likely to perceive the presence of observers as a threat.
The Trek
Gorilla habituation experience begins with an early morning briefing at the visitor center led by a ranger guide, then visitors venture into the forest with a habituation team departing much earlier than gorilla trekking groups.
The groups are led by one or two trekkers, they hike into the mountains searching for the designated troop while observing how trackers employ their skills to locate a mountain gorilla troop. In contract, gorilla treks proceed directly to a troop as the trackers have already determined the location of the troops.
Upon locating the troop, the rangers use gestures such as gorilla calls and grunts, calmly cut vegetation with machetes and engage in conservations to inform the gorillas of their presence.
Note: If the tracked troop is in the early stages of habituation, they may be shy toward humans.
Gorilla habituation experience may not always offer a close proximity to the gorillas as gorilla trek does as the troop is often still in the process of becoming fully habituated.
Therefore, it is essential to understand that gorilla habituation may introduce visitors to a shy or nervous troop in the presence of humans providing visitors with a more authentic experience with the gorillas. But it may disappoint some visitors if they expect a very close encounter. However, if the habituation process is in its advanced stage, visitors may indeed enjoy an intimate session with the gorillas.
It is advisable to manage expectations and if fortunate enough to encounter a particular friendly troop, consider yourself lucky.
Ethical Considerations
Both gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experience are ethical practices, the Uganda Wildlife Authority ensures that these experiences are conducted via a well-considered manner with the best interests of the gorillas in mind.
Furthermore, gorilla habituation experiences are offered at a higher cost and the revenue generated is largely utilized to support mountain gorilla conservation efforts in the parks.
In an ideal world, mountain gorillas would be left at peace and undisturbed in the wild. However, due to the need for intensive human efforts to protect them from poaching and habitat loss. The thoughtful implementation of gorilla treks and habituation experiences is a positive endeavor.
Habituating gorillas raises ethical questions regarding the extent to which human interaction should be permitted with wild animals, though gorilla experiences contribute to conservation efforts by raising awareness and generating revenue. Concerns exist about habituated gorillas becoming overly accustomed to human presence, potentially impacting their ability to thrive independently in the wild.
